Harry Duran: Los Angeles

Security Check:
Hi, I’m Harry, founder of FullCast.

What’s your historical Los Angeles and New York connection?
I was born in El Salvador but arrived in NY when I was 1-year old. I was raised in Yonkers, NY and lived most of my life in NYC (Williamsburg, East Village). A little over a year ago, my wife and I realized we had had enough of the Polar Vortex winters and made the decision to move to sunny Los Angeles (Silver Lake neighborhood)

Describe your experience in LA and your experience in NYC
I’ve been extremely happy with the weather and it’s effect on mood. I can’t stress that enough. It’s also great to have access to so many parks and events on the west coast. Since arriving here, we’ve been to Santa Barbara, the Sequoia National Forest, Death Valley and Coachella Music Festival. Although there are always cultural options in NYC and it is still one of my favorite cities, at times you’re limited by the weather.

What was the biggest challenge of moving from NYC to LA or vice-versa?
There wasn’t too much acclimation required as we had friends already here. Finding a new job that fits my wife’s experience has taken slightly longer than we thought.

How can NYC and LA best engage with each other?
It depends what the topic is. It’s hard because of the location, but maybe online virtual events

Favorite LA secret spot
Haven’t found one just yet. Although the huge staircases in my neighborhood are always a nice find.

Favorite NYC secret spot
Please Don’t Tell. The secret lounge inside the Crif Dogs hot dog spot in the East Village. Walk into the phone booth and pick up the receiver.
