Security Check:
Hi, I’m Karyn, and I’m proudly taking time off (after many years in corporate America).
What’s your historical Los Angeles and New York connection?
I moved to LA a year ago after ~15 years in NYC. For my first year, I was still doing my NYC based job, and was going to NYC every month. I stopped working at the end of Jan, so no more bi-coastal action for me..
Describe your experience in LA and your experience in NYC.
I loved living in NYC, but I hated the winters and always wanted to move to CA. Now that I live in LA – I still love NYC, but I also love LA and it is definitely my home for the foreseeable future.
What was the biggest challenge of moving from LA to NYC?
My personal biggest challenge was that I have wonderful long-term friendships in NYC, but knew almost no one when I moved to LA. I was afraid it was going to be hard to meet like-minded, smart people. But I was wrong. Driving is the biggest challenge in LA. I really dislike it.
How can NYC and LA best engage with each other?
I strongly believe that if there was a NYC with LA’s climate and beach, not only would everyone from LA and NYC want to live there – but probably everyone in any major city across the world would. I think each city needs to appreciate what the other has to offer, and stop being so snobby about what the other doesn’t have.
Favorite LA secret spot
Again – it’s not a secret spot, but Santa Monica OMB is my favorite spot. It’s like a playground for old people. I learned to slackline, met so many great people, and have watched many beautiful sunsets from there. It’s the best.
Favorite NY secret spot
I mean it’s not a secret – but Central Park is THE best place in all of NYC. I spent so many hours, run so many miles, and met so many good friends by just being in the Park. I tell every first time visitor to NYC that they MUST visit Central Park. It’s magical.
If you weren’t building what you were now, what would you be doing or building?
I am doing exactly what I’ve always wanted to do – be unemployed in CA! It’s awesome.
Inflight Entertainment: What song/album/podcast/show have you been engaged with lately?
I watched too many in-flight movies last year to even begin to recount. My favorite podcasts these days are Channel 33, StartUp, The Tim Ferriss Show Show, Morgan Page, and am always looking for new ones.
